Coxaco – A Family Legacy ~
David and Carolyn Cox
As a teenage girl, Carolyn Proctor would often ride with her father while making fuel deliveries for Kenco Petroleum in Thomasville, NC. When a young man came to Carolyn’s home to pick her up for a date, he parked in a field beside their house. Little did she know that later down the road, her father would help this young man obtain a job with Kenco working in the company’s maintenance department that would eventually lead to a driving position. The young man calling on Miss Carolyn was David Cox.
In 1965, David and Carolyn Cox were married, and David continued working for Kenco for over eighteen years. In 1983, Kenco merged with Mid-State Oil Company to expand their wholesale supplier market but made the decision to discontinue their trucking operations.
With the full support of his former employer, David and Carolyn started Cox Transport and Oil Company and joined APC in 1983. With one truck and trailer, David would continue serving his former customers as an APC operator. As business continued to grow, a second truck was added two years later in 1985. Over the years, David and Carolyn’s family and business continued to grow.
David passed away in 2013, but his legacy lives on through Carolyn and their three sons, Dean, Duane, and Donnie. Today, the company employs 29 people in the transport and fuel sales operation.
Carolyn believes strongly in the bond of love for one another and their faith in God. It guides them in their daily lives and in making decisions for their future. David set a standard of superior customer service over fifty years ago. That benchmark is still the foundation of their fleet today. Their story should remind us all that family and dedication are the building blocks of a successful legacy.
